Acting Prime Minister Cooper leads assessment team to review the impact of Hurricane Fiona

MAYAGUANA, The Bahamas — Acting Prime Minister, the Hon. I. Chester Cooper visited Mayaguana, September 21, 2022 for assessment of the impact of Hurricane Fiona on that island. Also part of the NEMA team in Mayaguana were Minister Obie Wilchcombe, Minister of State Myles LaRoda, Minister Clay Sweeting, NEMA Director Captain Stephen Russell, Permanent Secretary Carl Smith, and officials. The hurricane response assessment group made a prior stop in Exuma and received evacuees from Mayaguana who were returning home. The group met with residents, and visited Betsy Bay Dock, Betsy Bay Reverse Osmosis Plant, and Abraham’s Bay High School.

DPM leads assessment delegation to Mayaguana

Acting Prime Minister Hon. I. Chester Cooper leads a delegation to Mayaguana today. Mr. Cooper, along with a team of government ministers will assess the damage left in the wake of Hurricane Fiona which passed near the island on Tuesday.  The Acting Prime Minister is accompanied by Hon. Clay Sweeting, Minister of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Family Island Affairs, Hon.  Myles Laroda, Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, Basil McIntosh, MICAL Member of Parliament, Captain Stephen Russell, NEMA Director and officials of the Disaster Reconstruction Authority (DRA).

Senior citizens evacuated from Mayaguana to Exuma ahead of conditions associated Hurricane Fiona

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Ten Senior Citizens were evacuated from Mayaguana to Exuma early Tuesday morning (September 20) as a precautionary measure ahead of expected Tropical Storm conditions associated with Hurricane Fiona. Residents in the southeast Bahamas, particularly those on Inagua and Mayaguana, were forecast by The Bahamas Department of Meteorology to experience minimal Tropical Storm Conditions through the day Tuesday.  This was anticipated to include gusty winds, heavy rains and localized flooding. The group was received at the George Town Airport by Administrator Ms. Cristian Palacious and her team, and subsequently transported to accommodations that had been pre-arranged.
