Organizers gear up for the Coconut Festival, Pelican Point, East Grand Bahama

PELICAN POINT, Grand Bahama, The Bahamas – Organizers are excited for the relaunch of the Pelican Point Coconut Festival after not having it for three years, said Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey on Thursday, July 7.

During a press conference at the festival site, workmen were out in full force to ensure the site ready for the festival on Monday, July 11 – the final event of the Independence celebrations.

Minister Moxey said she is excited that the Beautiful Grand Bahama initiative is one that is proving to be successful. The East Grand Bahama team have worked to clear the area and assist in preparing the Pelican Point site for the festival on Monday.

Chairman of the Pelican Point Coconut Festival Committee, Cathy Laing said that almost three years ago, the settlement was “left in shambles by Hurricane Dorian”, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The event is normally held over the Easter weekend but is a part of the Independence celebrations this year.

Ms. Laing thanked Minister Moxey for the efforts of the Beautiful Grand Bahama team, and said the day will feature everything coconut – cuisine, gully wash, games and a coconut barking competition.  The event begins at 11am.

Elaine Smith of the Ministry of Tourism said the Ministry of Tourism will facilitate transportation for guests staying at resorts in Freeport taking them to the festival at noon and returning them to their properties at 6pm.
