Bahamas Honours Sir Sidney ‘With Love’ at Cultural Extravaganza

NASSAU, The Bahamas — The Government of The Bahamas celebrated the life and legacy of the late Sir Sidney Poitier with the cultural homage “Sir Sidney With Love,” held at Atlantis Resort on June 18, 2022. 

Among those in attendance were Governor General His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Cornelius A. Smith; Chief Justice the Hon. Sir Brian Moree; various Cabinet Ministers, senior Government officials; diplomats; cultural stakeholders; family members and well-wishers. 

Among those bringing remarks were Acting Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation the Hon. Chester Cooper; Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Public Service the Hon. Frederick Mitchell; Leader of the Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition the Hon. Michael Pintard; High Commissioner to CARICOM and CARICOM Member States Her Excellency Leslia Miller-Brice; and speaking on behalf of Sir Sidney’s family, daughter Beverly Poitier-Henderson. 

The cultural extravaganza, that was hosted by Dion Johnson and Chigozie Ijeoma, had a myriad of performances by singers, dancers, actors and musicians including: the Higher Level Band; Nehemiah Hield; Grand Bahamian singer/songwriter Phil Stubbs; popular songstress Alia Coley; Rake-n-Scrape Artist and entertainer Blaudy; songstress and musical theatre performer Anja Bowe; legendary Bahamian percussionist King Errisson, on the conga drums; Bahamian acappella and Gospel icons The Region Bells; stage and screen actress and E. Clement Bethel National Arts Festival Drama Adjudicator Jovanna Hepburn; the acclaimed Highgrove Singers; Cat Island Rake-n-Scrape legends ‘Ophie and the Webbsites’; songstress Charisa Smith; a performance of “Amazing Grace” by renowned singers Sonovia Pierre, Osano Neely, Mericha Walker, accompanied by the Highgrove Singers; and a Junkanoo finale with the One Family Junkanoo Group.

The Production Team of the event included Producer Fred Ferguson, Co-Producer and Co-Script Writer Philip Burrows; Script Writer Patrice Francis; Stage Manager Ronald Simms; Choreographer Ricardo Christie; Choir Director Adrian Archer; and the Higher Level Band was the house band. The Movi Group also provided audio/visual services, while the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas carried that event live on ZNS TV 13 and online.
